For a long time, I have a fascination for protein bars and I can honestly say, I've tried a LOT of them. But, if you carefully look at the ingredients, most bars are no different than a regular candy bar, except with more protein. If the list of ingredients is longer than an average newspaper article, you might just want skip it.
Since going Paleo, basically all protein bars became an "avoid" product, standard ingredients seem to be maltitol, soy protein isolate, soy lecithin, sugar, wheat flour, etc.
Just because the label reads "low carb" doesn't mean it's Paleo, we all know that by now.
So, where to find a more paleo type of protein bar? I know, we shouldn't try to "paleofy" products, but sometimes a protein bar is very handy on the go, or when the option of having a wholesome meal is just not possible.
Lucky enough, more natural options become available, and one of them is JayBar. Developed by Jay Robb, the Fudge Brownie comes closest to Paleo, although it does contain whey.
Another critical point I noticed, is that the ingredient xylitol is made from corn, so it can't be classified as totally paleo (again). But, on the upside, the ingredient list is short and has words I can pronounce. It tastes pretty good, nice and chewy and definitely like chocolate!
Containing 23 grams of carbs, it should not be something on your every day menu, but as a once in a while supplement it's worth the purchase. But only if you don't mind the non-paleo ingredients.
