Google+ Cave Food Kitchen: Danger! Dates

Danger! Dates

Often i see recipes for Paleo snacks that contain dried dates. A few times i've made snacks containing dates, until i started paying more attention to the nutritional value.
Personally, i couldn't really find the "value", except it contains a TON of sugar. I'm sure a lot of you already know this, but i can see the pitfall of it as well, as with most dried fruits. Sometimes you just have a taste for something sweet (at least i do) and it's easy to label fruits & dried fruits as "healthy" or "paleo", simply because they are fruits.
Most people on the Paleo diet are looking to lose weight, and the best way to do so, is to avoid sugars (in any shape or form) as much as possible. Whether it is called fructose, sucrose, glucose, etc. Either way, it will spike your insulin levels and most likely will cause the sudden drop in blood sugars shortly after.

Left, a short overview of dried dates main "nutrients" (approx. 1 date)

Moral of the story? Well, just be careful labeling a food "healthy" simply
because it's a natural food (organic food isn't necessarily always good for you either)
It's easy to overdo it with dates, since you never have just one.
Sugar is sugar in the end, and if you are looking to drop some pounds,
it's better to stick to the fats & protein.
