Google+ Cave Food Kitchen: Not so Paleo Pizza

Not so Paleo Pizza

My better half came home after a 10 day business trip, and of course I had to explain all about the Paleo thing that has kept me busy all this time. I decided to start while being home alone, so I could get used to it myself and experiment a bit with food without affecting the other members of the household.
This is a little warning for people that are interested in going Primal/Paleo; if the other people in the house are not joining you, things might get a bit complicated.
I felt terribly guilty having to answer a lot of questions with “no” about the things I was allowed to have, even though I get full support for my new dietary choices.
Of course I explained the 80/20 approach as well, and that this was not supposed to be a regimen, rather a lifestyle approach.

Nevertheless, we decided to make a home-made pizza on Sunday night. After spending quite a bit of time in the health food store, we picked spelt flour to make the pizza base with.
Going all out, I picked up some real buffalo mozzarella at a specialty store and some parmesan cheese.
Toppings included tuna, spinach, peppers, eggplant and a spicy tomato sauce made the night before.
The pizza dough turned out a bit too salty by mistake, but it was delicious, until……
A few hours later I started to feel really bloated and uncomfortable, and when going to bed and tossing and turning all night to fall asleep, I woke up groggy and very sluggish. And this was obviously not only from the lack of sleep.

I was surprised to feel the effects of a grain free diet so quickly, or maybe I was used to feeling bloated & sluggish so much I never noticed it before?
Anyway, I still don’t feel quite ok, but on the other hand don’t regret making an exception either.
On Wednesday I’m invited to have dinner at a friend’s house, and I intend to partake in the dinner as I would usually do.

Exceptions are necessary sometimes, although it might come at a price too.
Curious to hear about similar experiences, so feel free to drop me a comment!

  1. Agreed, exceptions are necessary as long as they don't happen too often. On Sunday I had a caesar salad at my in-laws and wondered why I was having brutal heartburn and felt so bloated on the way home. Then it dawned on me that the salad had a bunch of croutons in it. Bread once again came back to haunt me, not too mention what those bacon bits were made of.

Small blemishes in an otherwise healthy eating routine. As long as my average balances on the side of healthy...I'm happy. :)
